December 2015

What inspires you to choose the colours in your project?  This guild project of the North Peace Spinners' and Weavers' Guild in Fort St. John, is an acrylic warp to make blankets 34"x 48" with 4 " fringes.  The warp will make 5 blankets.  Participants use their own weft.  They either pay $20 as a donation to the Women's Resource Centre or give the blanket to the Women's Resource Centre.  Kathy B. gave us the yarn and this is the 4th project using Kathy's yarn that we have done in Pottery Twill from A Handweaver's Pattern Book by Marguerite Davison.  We tie on each new warp, onto a dummy warp.

We started with three shades of red and what to do with them?  We chose the two shades that are very similar in colour and randomly warped them as the main colour of the blankets.  The edge stripes are a random selection including a fourth red that is a bit shiny. Four of us designed the stripes and selected the colours, Rhya, Norma, Debbie and Faye.  It is a bit of a challenge with four opinions to merge into a collective design but we worked together very well and the process was a lot of fun.  We were using what we had in stock. We wanted a little orange, some yellow, a little green and navy blue.  We worked on this over a period of about 3 weeks, every Thursday morning.

It occurred to us that our colour scheme was the same as the flowers in the planter at the front door of Artspost, our studio location.  This actually helped us to decided to put a little white with the yellow as we were running out of yellow.  The petunias are white with a little yellow.  It is fun to remember the flowers of a warmer season.

We decided to make the pattern slightly unbalanced. The edge stripes and the yellow stripes are not even in width. It is a very bright and lively blanket and much prettier than my picture shows.  Faye used the brighter red in one of the smaller weft stripes.  It is very bright red and slightly courser yarn and perfect in very small amounts in this design.  Faye wove three 4" stripes of red, separated by smaller stripes of 2 shots each of three colours- yellow, orange, navy blue or navy blue, green, bright red.  The centre of the blanket is red with a repeat of the three 4" stripes at the other end. The 5 blankets will all be different and we look forward to taking them off the loom.

November 2015

Peace Country Spinners' and Weavers' Fall Conference in Fort St. John in September had an informal Show and Tell, a usual event when we gather together and share stories of some of our finished projects.

The flowers were made by members of the North Peace Spinners and Weavers in Fort St. John as a fund raising project.  The flowers were to be made with crocheted or knit handspun, felt, or woven fabric.  Needle felting is apparent in some of the flowers.

This is Shannon's table runner that she forgot to show at the Conference.

This is Mary's baby sweater for her great niece.

Carolyn brought her lovely sweater to show, just finished after many years in progress.  It is not handspun but it is beautiful.

This is Faye's tapestry of her dream of flying.

This is Faye's interpretation in tapestry of Bill Hibberd's self portrait. www.billhibberd.com

This is pin weaving gone mad.  Felted in the washing machine and then cut and manipulated to decorate Faye's hat.  I had been knitting odds and ends of wool and felting them to cut and sew onto my hats.  This Spring I started pin weaving and it is so much fun, weaving various colours together.  It is almost addictive. http://www.pinloomweaving.com/

Shannon had attended a hat making workshop in Grande Prairie in 2012 and after seeing her hat decorated with bits of felt and yarn I went home and have been decorating my hats with felted sculptures ever since.

This is Faye's commission to make Newfoundland mitts.  I had plyed the dark brown yarn and when the mitts were washed they expanded in width and were too big.  So I started again, dyeing 2 ply yarn charcoal grey and knitting finer mitts and following the pattern exactly.  The client is very happy.  I forgot to take a picture of them. (:

October 2015

Peace Country Spinners' and Weavers' Fall Workshops in September in Fort St. John, featured tapestry weaver Elaine Duncan and Marjo Wheat, Master Spinner. See more of Elaine's work at www.elaineduncan.com/gallery

Five days learning how to weave tapestry from the front or back.  This was a refresher course for some of us.  Two days only of instruction was an option, taken advantage of by a couple of our members.  Handspun yarn dyed with nature dyes were used in our work and was a pleasure to use as all of the colour harmonize. We had a wonderful time.

We ate and dined well including a party on Saturday night at the home of one of the participants.  Socializing within our group is one of the great benefits of belonging to Peace Country Spinners and Weavers.  We share information about our current projects and guild activities.  We are inspired by each other as well as by the instructors of the workshops.

The  spinning workshop featured spinning for consistency, adjusting knitting patterns and crock pot dyeing. There was a lot of laughter during this workshop!

And the weaving continued...

It was a very productive time at the Lakeview Inn in Fort St. John.  Thank you to Elaine and Marjo for sharing your expertise.  Thank you to the Fort St. John PCSW members who helped to make these workshops so successful.  There was an unofficial nomination to have 5 day workshops more often.
